Muhimma Perspective / Physical Availability
Ehrenberg-Bass Institute Framework

Being thought of
is only half
the battle.

Mental Availability gets your brand into the consumer's mind at the moment of need. Physical Availability determines whether they can actually find and buy it. Without both, even the strongest brand loses sales — silently, at the shelf or screen.

Physical Availability — 3 Pillars
01
Presence
Is the brand stocked in the stores where buyers shop?
02
Prominence
Does the buyer notice the brand at point of purchase?
03
Portfolio
Does the brand offer the right pack sizes and formats?
The Ehrenberg-Bass equation
Mental Availability + Physical Availability = the two pillars of sustainable brand growth. Both are required. Neither is sufficient alone.
The Missing Half

You can win the mind
and still lose the sale.

A brand can score well on Mental Availability — many consumers think of it in buying situations — and still underperform in actual sales. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute identifies this as a Physical Availability gap: the brand is mentally present but physically absent, invisible, or poorly formatted at the point of purchase.

Physical Availability is the ease with which a buyer can find and buy your brand in their specific buying situation — across all the channels they want to buy from, in the format they need, at the moment they need it.

The diagnostic signal to watch
If your Mental Market Share is significantly higher than your actual sales market share, your brand has a Physical Availability problem — consumers want to buy you but can't find you, can't find the right format, or walk past you to a competitor at the shelf.

The 3 Pillars

Presence. Prominence.
Portfolio.

Physical Availability is not a single measure — it is a diagnostic across three dimensions, each capable of independently blocking a sale even when the other two are strong.

01 Presence

Distribution — Is the brand stocked where buyers shop?

The most fundamental pillar: if a consumer wants to buy your brand but it is not stocked in the stores or channels where they shop, the sale is lost regardless of how high your Mental Availability is. Presence is measured through retail audit data — weighted distribution, numeric distribution, and shelf facings relative to competitors.

Weighted Distribution
% of category sales volume accounted for by stores carrying the brand
Numeric Distribution
% of stores in the market that physically stock the brand
Shelf Facings
Number of product facings on shelf relative to competitors
CMO question
"Where in the market can our brand not be bought at all?"
02 Promi-
nence

Shelf Visibility — Does the buyer actually notice it?

A brand can be stocked and still be invisible. If a consumer walks past your brand to pick up a competitor's, you have lost a sale you technically had access to. Prominence measures whether buyers notice your brand at the point of purchase — in-store on the shelf, or in-app on screen. It is measured through consumer surveys asking which brands they noticed when they last shopped the category.

Total Market Prominence
What share of all category buyers noticed the brand on shelf or screen?
Own-User Prominence
Did the brand's own buyers see it when they went to shop?
Competitive Prominence
Which competitor brands are more visible to your own users at the shelf?
CMO question
"Are our own buyers walking past us to a competitor at the shelf?"

folio

Format Fit — Is the right product available for the occasion?

Being stocked and visible is still not enough if the format available does not match the buying occasion. A consumer looking for a small single-serve pack who finds only bulk sizes will buy a competitor. Portfolio measures whether the brand's pack sizes, formats, and price tiers cover the full range of Category Entry Points — leaving no buying occasion under-served.

Pack Size Fit
Does each brand offer the right pack sizes for its target buying occasions?
CEP Alignment
Are Category Entry Points matched with brand-specific format options?
Format Gaps
Where do buyers want formats that don't exist in the current portfolio?
CMO question
"Which buying occasions are we losing because we don't have the right format available?"
The Muhimma Methodology

Three data sources.
One complete picture.

Muhimma measures Physical Availability through a combination of consumer surveys, Google Reviews intelligence, and optional on-the-ground mystery shopping — giving brands a 360-degree view of how easy they are to find and buy.

Consumer Surveys
Core methodology — all brands

Our BusyBee community of 400,000 identity-verified community members is deployed to measure Prominence and Portfolio directly — asking category buyers which brands they noticed on their last shopping trip, and which pack sizes and formats they found missing.

Prominence: which brands buyers noticed in-store or on app
Portfolio: pack size satisfaction and unmet format needs
Channel preference: where buyers want to find and buy the brand
Competitor visibility: which rivals are grabbed when the brand is absent
Google Reviews Intelligence
For brands with physical locations or digital channels

For brands with physical stores, restaurants, or digital platforms, Muhimma collects and analyzes Google Reviews at scale — categorising consumer feedback as Category Entry Points and Physical Availability attributes to build a real-time diagnostic dashboard.

Dashboard outputs
Sentiment by location — which stores are over- or under-performing on Physical Availability
Ranking of Physical Availability issues by frequency and severity across all locations
Competitor location comparison — how your Physical Availability scores against direct rivals
CEP-tagged feedback — which buying occasions are generating the most friction
Tracks your own locations and competitor locations simultaneously
Mystery Shopping
Optional add-on component

For brands requiring on-the-ground validation, Muhimma deploys verified BusyBee shoppers to conduct standardised in-store or in-app visits — scoring Physical Availability against a defined framework and capturing photographic evidence.

Shelf presence, prominence, and competitor positioning captured at location level
Standardised scoring across all visited locations for fair comparison
In-store photography of shelf layout, signage, and competitor adjacency
Deployable across KSA and UAE at scale through our BusyBee network

What It Diagnoses

Six questions your Physical Availability audit will answer.

Buyer Reach

Where in the market cannot your brand be bought at all? Identifies specific stores, regions, or channels with zero stocking — the most fundamental Physical Availability failure.

Shelf Stand-Out

Are buyers noticing your brand at point of purchase, or walking past it to a competitor? Reveals whether packaging, shelf position, or facings are letting you down.

Format Fit

Which pack sizes or formats are blocking purchase in specific buying occasions? Pinpoints unmet format needs before they become a competitor's opportunity.

Substitution Risk

When your brand is absent or invisible, which competitor are buyers reaching for instead? Maps exactly who is capturing your lost sales at the shelf.

Regional Blind Spots

Which geographic areas have entire buyer pools that cannot access or notice your brand? Exposes gaps invisible from aggregate distribution data.

Portfolio Architecture

Does your portfolio span enough price tiers and use cases to recruit all buyer types? Tests whether your range architecture is leaving buyers — and sales — behind.

Don't let poor physical
execution be the
silent killer of your brand's growth.

Your Mental Availability work is already building the right consumer associations. Physical Availability analysis ensures those associations convert into actual sales — by confirming your brand is present, prominent, and in the right format, everywhere your consumers want to buy.
